For much of the duration of the war against Iraq, Tri-City
Action for Peace maintained a continuous vigil (24 hours for the first
week and 6 am to midnight afterwards) at the Saginaw courthouse on the
corner of Court & Michigan. We got heckled, we got threatened, but
the experience built our peace community, raised consciousness in Saginaw,
and gave passers-by who believed in peace some hope. Several of our
most fervent TCAP members now came to us as a result of this vigil.
We must be grateful to Renaye, Margaret, and Rosalie of the Jeannine
Coallier Catholic Worker for initiating the idea and doing much of the
work to maintain it. In many ways, TCAP found itself through this powerful
act of community building and public witness.
