The
Valentines for Peace project was a lot of fun. We made 5 giant
valentines out of wood and canvas and got help from the youth of St.
Joseph's, St. Andrew's, and St. Mary's Cathedral parishes as well as
the Islamic Center of Saginaw and some kids of the Cathedral
District neighborhood. We held a sendoff service Thursday, February
13th at Jefferson Ave United Methodist Church and discussed
redefining love as well as the origin of Valentine's Day. Few people
know that St. Valentine was beheaded by Emperor Claudius II for
marrying people in secret after Claudius had outlawed marriage since
it distracted his soldiers from his wars. So Valentine's Day has
always been an antiwar holiday!
On
Thursday night, Morgan Guyton, SVSU student Monique Metcalfe, and
Central Michigan student Lisa Rapes drove to Washington, DC with the
valentines strapped to the roof of Morgan's car. We held a press
conference in front of the US Capitol and then proceeded to deliver
our valentines to our Representatives, Senators, and even one to the
Vietnam Memorial. After delivering the valentines, we drove north to
New York City where we participated in the biggest antiwar protest
in recent history on Saturday, February 15th.
Props
must be given to all the kids, their parents, their teachers, and to
Ellen Garrett for initiating the idea at a TCAP meeting!
