How to Stop the War

(Article from Common Dreams)

Because what we teach our children determines the future of our society:

Please give your children non-violent games.

Some examples of fun, non-violent computer games are Tetris, the Myst Series and Starship Titanic.
You can also search the internet for non-violent games to download for free.

Pull the Plug on Violence!

Did you know?

Only on TV is there violence without pain. Sometimes, TV violence is even supposed to be funny.

But grownups know that real violence causes lots of pain and sadness.

Just as children learn things from their older brothers and sisters, they also learn things from their television heroes, even bad things.

Some children who watch lots of violence on TV learn to fight more.

          Others learn to become victims.

And many learn that violence is fun to watch, even in real life. These kids encourage their friends to fight.

TV characters use violence to solve their problems. We want our children to solve their problems without fighting.

What can parents do?

Here's how you can help protect your child from TV violence and real-life violence:

Don't put a TV set in your child's room, where you won't know what he or she is watching.

Limit your child to two hours of TV a day.

Help him or her to choose programs that are not violent.

Watch TV together, and talk about what you're watching. Ask your child:

                    Is this real or pretend?

Is this the way we do things at home?

What do you think would happen if you did that?

Tell your child how you feel about violence.

Contact your representatives. Ask them to vote pro-peace. Go to Congress.Org to reach any elected officials (national, state or local). Site includes phone numbers, mail & email addresses.

Write a letter to the editor. Letters to the editor of newspapers are a great tool to influence public opinion with the peace perspective. Letters should be no longer than 250 words. Newspapers tend to prioritize letters that respond directly to news articles or editorial columns. Always be polite and professional.

Use Peace Buttons, T-Shirts, Bumper Stickers, Posters Let others know that you are for peace. Doing so keeps the idea of peace in people's minds and lets them know that not everyone is pro-war. It also helps to counter the corporate media's propaganda. There are many web sites that offer peace items for sale. You can find and download free posters on the internet  - or design & print your own.

Display the Earth "The Not In Our Name project calls on everyone to display the image of the earth across the United States to show unity with people around the world who are
suffering from the injustices done by our government in our name."

"Not In Our Name has launched a campaign to display a million images of the globe/earth across the country with the slogan: 'War on the World? War on Iraq? Not In Our Name!' We are calling on everyone to help get up 100 thousand of these images by the end of the year, building towards a million in the coming months."
